Amy Coddington was grateful that her breast cancer was caught early when the cure rate is high. It was found with her yearly, routine mammogram. Since she had questionable tissue in the non- cancerous breast, she and her doctor decided a double mastectomy was her safest route.
That decision was made easier when she did her research and found out about a state of the art breast reconstruction surgery available in Austin. She says, “It was very much a turning point for me. From that moment on, I felt like everything was going to be okay.”
That surgery is called DIEP Flap or Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator Flap. Austin Plastic Surgeon Ned Snyder offers the complex procedure. It works by doctors making an incision, usually along the bikini line, much like that used for a tummy tuck.
The necessary skin, soft tissue and tiny blood vessels are removed to build the new breast. These blood vessels are matched to supplying vessels at the mastectomy site and reattached under a microscope.
Dr. Snyder says, “With DIEP flap, once someone is done and once the reconstruction is complete, it’s something that’s their own tissue that will age with them like a natural breast and won’t require maintenance in the future.”
The reconstruction of one breast takes about 3 hours and is usually done immediately after the mastectomy. So, the patient wakes up from surgery with new breasts built with her own tissue, skin and blood.
Coddington says, “I would have never thought that you could get back to such a natural looking and feeling condition after a mastectomy.”
Reconstruction is a very personal decision for women facing a mastectomy. Some don’t choose it at all. Others prefer more traditional reconstruction using breast implants. Amy Coddington says she’s pleased with the choice she made. “For me, I wanted to get back to as close to what I was before so I didn’t wake up and say, oh my goodness, I’ve had cancer. Now I feel really good and very strong.”
